Did you know there are six areas of orthodontic treatment?
1. Prevention 2. Interception and Early Guidance 3. Comprehensive teenage and adult orthodontics 4. Reconstructive Dentistry orthodontics 5. TMJ and pain dentistry orthodontics 6. Surgical orthodontics
A. An orthodontist needs four years of college, four years of dental school, and two years of post graduate study in orthodontics before they can practice the specialty.
B. All orthodontists are board certified dentists.
C. Dr. Charles Tweed was the first certified orthodontist in the U.S.
D. The first "braces" were constructed by Pierre Fouchard ("the father of dentistry") in 1728. Fouchard's "braces" consisted of a flat strip of metal which was connected to the teeth by pieces of thread.
E. Bands were invented by Schange in 1841. The first bands consisted of a strip of metal, with a screw to adjust their size.
F. Orthodontic brackets were invented by Edward Angle in 1915. The brackets consisted of little hooks of metal which were attached to the bands that went around the teeth.
G. Dr. Angle modified his design producing the edgewise bracket in 1928. If you or your parents had braces before 1970, they probably got braces similar to those invented by Dr. Angle.
